Tadalafil is a generic medication that belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of blood vessels and increasing blood flow to specific areas of the body.
Benefits
- Erectile Dysfunction (ED): Helps men with ED achieve and maintain an erection firm enough for sexual activity by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. Its effects can last for up to 36 hours.
- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): Treats symptoms of BPH, such as difficulty urinating, decreased flow, and frequent urination, by relaxing muscles in the prostate and bladder.
- Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH): Improves the ability to exercise in adults with PAH by relaxing the blood vessels in the lungs, which reduces pulmonary arterial pressure and makes it easier for the heart to pump blood to the lungs.
Dosage: The dosage of tadalafil varies depending on the condition being treated:
- Erectile Dysfunction:
- As needed: The typical starting dose is 10 mg, taken at least 30 minutes before sexual activity. The dose can be increased to 20 mg or decreased to 5 mg based on effectiveness and side effects. Not more than once daily.
- Once daily: 2.5 mg or 5 mg taken at the same time each day, without regard to the timing of sexual activity.
- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: 5 mg taken once daily at the same time each day.
- Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: 40 mg (two 20 mg tablets) taken once daily.
Precautions:
- Heart Conditions: Use with caution in individuals with heart problems. Discuss your cardiovascular health with your doctor before using tadalafil. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience chest pain, dizziness, or nausea during sexual activity.
- Blood Pressure: Can cause a temporary decrease in blood pressure. Use caution if you have low blood pressure.
- Vision or Hearing Loss: Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes or sudden decrease or loss of hearing has been reported rarely. If this occurs, stop taking tadalafil and seek immediate medical attention.
- Alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption while taking tadalafil can increase the risk of side effects like headache, dizziness, increased heart rate, and low blood pressure.
- Allergic Reaction: Stop taking tadalafil and seek immediate medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
